Big Stuff Band

This band is something else. I can’t say I’ve found many groups recently that I enjoy listening to live more than these folks. I guess that is pretty obvious by how much I check them out all over NYC.

Here’s a bit of a recap I began to jot down one of the first times I’d seen them at my local bar.

So what I saw was something building.

They took me, a wanderer- on a sonic voyage. Is that too much? It might just be.

As I sat there I began to notice the room’s energy shift and I felt like they were toying with us a bit. It went kinda like this.

A few covers of music that might be older than they are. All done so well that I was shocked.

What i was most impressed by was how well the instruments were mixed. All the levels were on point.

Okay cool, they hit me with what you know I love about soul music. That’s awesome.

But then, in the next moment this right there? I saw an ill double up happening with the number of people in the room. VIBES.

The number of the people paying attention to the tunes.

5 to 10. To 20. To a respectable 40 ish.

But that wasn’t the thing though. In my opinion it was the texture of the music being woven together in the fashion of the finest of tapestries.

People came and left . Then more staggered in the stayed. The folks that stayed partook and gave the band some energy. Big Stuff gave it right back.

I’ve heard that there’s a about 8 members in band, but I generally see about 4. I believe it has a lot to do with the size and limited space in some of the bars. It’ll be dope to catch them with everyone on stage together, but I swear I love what I get each time I hear them.

I encourage you to make the time to check them out as close to now as possible and if you’re ever in a city and they’re performing- pull up.

Projections

So Projections are another group I gotta speak on. Consisting of Dan and Woolfy- the name of the group may have changed, but the party stayed bussin!

I love listening to these dudes whether they’re playin their original songs or spinnin records at parties. A steady, dreamy party.

Mix Master Mari

Hey, what can I say? I’m feeling awfully west coast today.

My dude Mari has been gettin busy on beats for the longest time! When I listen to him rhyme I see his perspective. I love that his music is created with so many of the homies involved. That right there adds to the texture of the landscape I navigated through my youth.

The production stays on point and mixes what I grew up loving presented in a way that doesn’t feel out of place with with I like currently.

Give him a listen!

Woolfy

Woolfy

Just press play. Woolfy is groovy AF. I met him while blissfully tucked within Canoga Park, CA. If I had to say anything about this mix of disco, funk, soul, and electronic vibes- it’s that the person delivering it to you is equally as impressive.

There hasn’t been one time I’ve been around Woolfy musically and didn’t have a one of those nights that were just too much to think about without a chuckle. Whether he was performing, spinning records, or at a backyard boogie. Or, if I was spinning records or taking pics of all that was going on. It’s just always been dope.

Like I said. Just. Press. Play.

Ji-Q

Ji-Q is one of the artists I met here in Queens, NY. Astoria to be specific. Before I learned he was making music I’d just see him around the way. Around me he’s been a quiet person. Very low key.

I’ve seen him continue to put energy and effort in developing and shaping what it is he looks to present. I admire that tremendously. The songs continue to get better. The bars and the beats feel like they are leading you somewhere.

My man’s desire to do this thing the right way stands out just as much as the progress he’s making.

The irony is that as low key he is, there is a bravado there in plain sight. GIve him a spin!

Maybe it’s a Queens thing…
